The trick that makes this easy. You will notice in the construction pictures the assembly process. The spacer blocks are a cut piece of 2 x 4 that is ripped to 1 3/8” high. Then cut in pieces 2 5/16” wide. Without these life would be difficult. All parts are glued using white glue. Bottom was glued and nailed with small nail gun using 1 5/8” brads to back. Bottom is a piece of 1 x 6 ripped in half. Back can be anything approximately 1/2 thick. In my case I use base trim that is 4 1/4” high. This is also my fascia. Picture of two other layouts using this design are provide and they use 1/2 plywood. Front, edge, and box parts are 1/4” hard wood ripped on table saw. Edge is 1” to hold pick sticks and pencils. Card slots are 1 5/8” depth and 1 1/2” High. VERY IMPORTANT When gluing the slot box dividers into place you place white glue on bottom and back and put in place. Place spacer blocks as you do each one. But when you reach the other end go back and roll spacers up on edge or you will have a big problem if the glue sets. The spacer will get stuck to edge. Once glue has tacked up remove spacers and come back next day to place front on and finish assembly and painting.
Cutting slot spacers. I cut on chop saw using stop. Can be seen in picture with saws. I cut three 1/4”x 1 1/2” x 8’ strips at a time. This makes a lot of slot parts. Please be careful and take your time, moving chop saw up fast can catch the small peace’s with the teeth in the saw blade and they go flying. Please follow all safety instruction with your power equipment these are dangerous pieces of equipment.
Round the corners of the bottom and use sand paper it will come out a lot nicer. Do not paint until assembled, glue is stronger with out paint on gluing surface. I used a small 1 1/2’ brush to paint whole car card box including the inside of slots.
